Chiropractic Adjustment
The most common and well known therapeutic procedures performed by chiropractors is spinal manipulation also referred to as a “chiropractic adjustment”. The purpose of spinal manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile or restricted in their movement as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for an individual. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, allowing tissues to heal.
Chiropractic Techniques Used
At Hometown Chiropractic Dr Walton has been trained in a variety of different chiropractic techniques. This allows him to adapt to the needs of his patients. The type of techniques that we offer at Hometown Chiropractic is listed below:
Manual Adjustment
Diversified- Commonly referred to as Manual adjustment. This is a hands on method of treatment that is the most common chiropractic technique. By applying gentle, quick pressure on the joints, to regain segmental motion. This adjustment is often accompanied by an audible release or “popping sound”.
Instrument Assisted
Activator- The Activator is an instrument assisted technique. The Activator a spring-loaded, handheld instrument that applies a low-force pulse to specific joints. No audible release or “pop” is heard with the activator. The instrument is commonly used on children, and elderly patients.
Cox Flexion/Distraction
Cox Flexion/Distraction- Flexion/Distraction is a technique that is typically used for low back pain. The technique uses gentle force on the lower back while stretching the spine the doctor glides the table in different directions to get each vertebra to move individually. Flexion/Distraction is beneficial for treatment of disc problems, sciatica, and joint degeneration. It is a low force technique doesn’t cause the audible release of the joint or “popping” sound.
Thompson/Drop Table
Thompson/Drop Table- This is a specific chiropractic method and is a variation of the Diversified technique that uses a special table with several segments called drop pieces. These segments can be cocked up a fraction of an inch, so when the thrust is delivered, the table will drop this fraction of an inch. This is a low force technique that is very comfortable for patients.
Physiotherapy Services
Physiotherpy services are done in the office to aide the chiropractic adjustment in helping our patients get out of pain fast and to help them stay out of pain. The physiotherapy services that we do in our office are listed below
Electrical Therapy
Electrical Therapy- Interferential Electrical Therapy is done to help reduce muscle spasms and inflammation in the injured area. This is a light electrical impulse that is applied to the area in need at the comfort level of the patient.
Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic Ultrasound- Therapeutic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to reduce pain, increase circulation, increase mobility of soft tissues, and reduce inflammation
Traction
Traction- We have a state of the art traction table called The Back on Trac table. This table is uniquely designed to allow fully automated axial and bilateral distraction while adding in heat and vibration therapy to the treatments. This is great for disc pain, sciatic pain, and muscle spasms.
Exercises
Exercises- Rehabilitative Exercises are an important part in getting a patient out of pain and helping them stay out of pain. Dr Walton has specific training in sports rehabilitation, earning a masters degree in the field.
