Massage Modalities:

Deep Tissue

Deep-tissue/deep-muscle massage affects the sub-layer of muscles and connective tissue. Helps with chronic muscle pain and injury rehabilitation, and reduces inflammation-related pain caused by arthritis and tendinitis.

Swedish

This type of massage uses long, flowing movements to stimulate circulation and energize the body. Benefits include general relaxation, improved circulation, and dissolution of scar tissue. It also speeds healing, and reduces swelling from injury.

Injury

Involves techniques specifically aimed at injury rehabilitation: reducing swelling, increasing range of motion, dissolving scar tissue, and reducing pain.

Structural

Realigns muscles and skeletal system to their natural position after they have been displaced through injury, incorrect posture, repetitive movements, etc.

Russian

Designed to provide the patient with the least invasive and most comfortable treatment. Each stroke in Russian massage has a known physiological effect on the body.

Sports

Designed to enhance athletic performance and recovery, calms the nervous system, flushes toxins out of the body, and reduces recovery time.

Craniosacral Therapy

A gentle, noninvasive method of improving the function of the central nervous system. Effective with a range of medical problems including chronic pain, eye difficulties, scoliosis, motor-coordination impairments, learning disabilities, etc. Uses light pressure to test for restrictions and assist the natural movement of fluid within the craniosacral system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is massage for me?

Everyone can benefit from massage. Whether you suffer from muscle tension, headaches, sore joints, specific skeletal problems, or if you are just looking to relax, massage can improve your quality of life. You should especially consider massage if you are receiving chiropractic care, recovering from surgery, injury, or if you are an athlete.

Why does massage work?

In a direct way, massage physically manipulates muscles, breaks up adhesions and scar tissue, clears out the lymph system, and generally loosens body tissues. Indirectly, the pressure and movement of massage causes microscopic tissue damage (similar to exercising). This jumpstarts the body’s natural ability to heal itself, and draws particular attention to whatever area has been worked.

Does it hurt?

There are many types of massage. Some people are just looking for a quiet, relaxing experience. When injury rehabilitation or specific changes in in the body are the goal of the massage (e.g. bringing the feet back into proper alignment or eliminating forward rotation of the shoulders) more pressure is used, and in some cases there can be a “hurt so good” type of pain. That said, you should always let your therapist know if you are uncomfortable, or unable to relax.

Do i have to take my clothes off?

The most important thing in your massage is to make sure you feel comfortable and safe, so that your body is able to relax. Your therapist will invite you to disrobe to your comfort level because this will allow them to work your muscles more fully and directly, however, it is possible to do a complete massage session with the client completely clothed. If you choose to disrobe, your modesty will be ensured by the draping of sheets and blankets throughout your session.
